Create Shared Contact Groups for Gmail Contacts

Here’s a way to create shared contact groups for Gmail Contacts using a service called Grexit.com.

Flashissue is a great tool for creating mailing lists from your Google Contacts and for sending bulk email through Gmail but what happens if you are working in a team and you want to access a colleague’s contact groups and you want to create a mailing list from it? The short answer is you cannot. This is where using product like Grexit will let you plug the gap.

The Shared Contacts feature in GrexIt lets you set up a Google Contacts group as a shared group between Gmail users and Google Apps users. You can share a Google Contacts group with any set of Gmail and Google Apps users with this feature.

Once you have set up a Google Contacts group as a shared group and have added users to the contact group, new contacts added to the group by any of these users would be synced to all the accounts of all the users in the group. Also, edits done to any of the contacts would also reflect in other accounts.

The set up flow is a bit clunky and the documentation from Grexit is not so good but here’s what to do

Make sure that Grexit is installed as a Google App through your Admin dashboard. Here’s the screens:

Note: you will need to repeat this for each Google app domain you want to share contacts across.

Now go the Grexit admin dashboard

You’ll need to now go and set up the Contacts Groups you want to share between accounts.

Access the dashboard from this link – https://grexit.com/settings/sharedcontacts

and then add contacts into these groups through Gmail Contacts:

After you have completed this, wait 3 minutes and you should see the Grexit Contacts group appear in all the Gmail accounts you have set up to view the group.

If you are using Flashissue to create bulk email lists for sending newsletters from Gmail, you can now use these Groups to generate mailing lists. The following image is from inside the Flashissue Lists tab.

Open your mailing list:

Click Add Contacts and select the Grexit shared group to select the contacts:

You can install Grexit from the Chrome Store (you need to be using the Chrome browser).
